Signs worth documenting
- Fresh-cut limbs or exposed pale wood on trunks
- Repeatedly blocked culverts or rising water behind woody debris
- Unexpected standing water around timber, roads or low fields
- New dams, slides and other beaver travel routes
Why water levels matter
- Roots need access to oxygen, and prolonged saturation can stress or kill susceptible trees
- Culvert blockages can redirect flow toward roads, structures or managed fields
- Debris and bank conditions may complicate drainage work
- Opening a dam without addressing ongoing beaver activity may not be a lasting fix
What an assessment covers
- Check the dam, wildlife signs and likely source of water restriction
- Review access for traps, tools and any needed equipment
- Separate animal control from drainage and dam-removal work in the scope
General guidance only. Site conditions and wildlife regulations vary.
